The past two days, a very affectionate and large black tomcat has come to our front door asking for attention. He is a very vocal and persistent fellow… Yet we do not own any cats (especially available females)! He kneads his big paws at the sight of anyone peering at him through a window… My first assumption is he has wandered a bit far home from a loving family some time ago, prayers that he wasn’t dumped as he also has some age to him. Cats are very good at fending for themselves but this guy is a little emaciated so he has been receiving milk and some soft dog food… There are also plenty of mice around the house (even with garden snakes, two feral cats (we have named them Beebee and Sylvester) and a weasel having the run of our property) so Samhain’s (yes, he has gotten a name too) presence is welcomed. Until we find his family, and as long as he asks, he will be given good food for his belly and strokes on his back in gratitude for his contributions as a mouser. But that isn’t the only thing he brings that is good!

As anyone who knows me is aware, I am a very spiritual person. From being prophetic as a child (before my memories) and a life after death experience in my teens, the list has only grown for me as life has been quite the adventure! I am very open minded because of the multiple unexplainable experiences… So, like a good tracker or scout, I watch for signs and communication from the spiritual realm. VERY REAL FOR ME. It isn’t often that I have a week like this last one where that which has been sought is making itself readily available, a metaphoric harvest. I shared with a close friend that on an emotional level, I have felt like a child coming down to the tree on Christmas day, opening gifts and being delighted at the rewards inside. There have been MANY SPIRIT GIFTS this week, Samhain is ONE.

Nobody can deny the significance of the symbol of the cat throughout history, an importance which holds still. Celtic Mythology in Scottish and Irish tradition speaks of the at Sith or Sidhe, who was a large Black Cat, but with one white dot his belly, Cat Sith was considered a fairy (or a witch) depending on the story, who could transform nine times as he wished. When it appears, it always has an arched back with hair up. Folk Tales say that this creature can claim souls before they move to their final resting place unless distracted by mourners with riddles or music. But Cat Sith is not wholly sneaky or mean. On Samhain, he blesses homes that leave him a bit of cream for the night.

But what does it mean when you open your door and find yourself greeted by a black cat?

It is a common belief in Scotland and parts of northern England that finding a black cat at the door in the morning is a sign of approaching good fortune, especially when it comes to money. This belief has been around for a long time and is believed to have originated in dock towns where the wives of men at sea would try to guarantee their safety by getting a black cat. Having one turn up at the door meant that he would be coming home – hopefully with the riches of the oceans in tow.

  • Scotland: Place Black Kittens on your porch. They allay misfortune and attract positive events.
  • England: A Black Cat walking in front of you takes your troubles with them. If a Black Cat visits your inn, welcome him nicely, and he will bring in more patrons. Giving a couple a pudgy Black Kitty as a charm for an excellent marriage.

It was custom in much of Europe to provide a black cat for those who were deathly ill as a way to help the healing process. It may even have worked, although doctors today say this is more likely to do with the calming presence of the animal rather than any other means.
