My family, friends and followers know that I share many things about mindset and subconscious training, having recently acquired a Master Practitioner’s certification in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). I am also currently going through a level of spiritual awakening, my 50s apparently being the time in my life where prioritizing my own needs becomes a new life skill. (((IT SETS MY HEART ABLAZE))) to share my journey, knowing that it might just help someone else!! WHAT MANY DO NOT KNOW is that I also live with autoimmune disease… May I introduce an inheritance of a genetic condition, Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, and then it’s engagement in 1997 to fibromyalgia (FMS). The two of them can be a troublesome couple and because of this, there are times when my blogging and advertising get put on the back burner. (((PLAYS HEAD GAMES FOR SURE))) As a wellness advocate, I tend to forget that I need to be well too!! Good thing my grown daughters aren’t afraid to ground me when I truly need a break!

When being grounded, I like to do research… I found a great read and am going to cut and paste portions of it into this blog and insert commentary, to reach out to those of you who, like me, struggle with making yourself a priority during times when it feels like so many things need your attention… WE MUST PRIORITIZE SELF CARE and this article, coming from an M.D. (I appreciate this because most doctors I have encountered are prescription pushers), shares information about how to do so naturally. Prescriptions are dysfunctional medicine in my experience, metaphorically bandaging on the surface issues that are infected and deep while leaving one with problematic side effects. “Lancing the wound” or getting to the root of the problem is where we enable our bodies to demonstrate their amazing capacity for healing!!

Conventional medicine often addresses autoimmune disease with powerful immune-suppressing medication rather than searching for the cause. That’s like taking a lot of aspirin while we stand on a tack. The treatment is not more aspirin or a strong immune suppressant, but removing the tack.

Instead, I look for underlying causes. This approach, called functional medicine, is a fundamentally different way of solving medical problems, one that allows us to decipher the origins of illness and identify the disturbances in biology that lead to symptoms.

I believe that when you identify the underlying sources of inflammation, you can heal the body. These might include stress, hidden infections, food allergies or sensitivities, toxic exposure, genetic predisposition, nutrient deficiencies, and leaky gut.

Finding and eliminating the root cause of autoimmune diseases requires detective work, trial and error, and patience—but the results are worth it.

1. Eat a whole food, anti-inflammatory diet.

Focus on anti-inflammatory foods like omega-3 wild fish, leafy greens and turmeric, and avoid inflammatory foods, such as sugar and corn oils.

My holistic doctor told me to “just eat Paleo” when helping me address chronic urticaria. One other thing I have done with ASTOUNDING results is juice fast… Doing this is the closest thing I have found to a “miracle cure”. That suggestion often turns people away when I advise it because of the level of commitment required, but let me tell you, PAIN IS A HUGE MOTIVATOR. Watch the video in the link below.

2. Look for hidden infections.

These include yeast, viruses, bacteria, and Lyme. A functional-medicine practitioner can help you identify and eliminate these infections.

Odds are, if you have a yeast infection… you have a leaky gut. These things come on over time, manifested by consumption of refined foods, chronic stress, NEVER TAKING A BREAK… Again, that movie link above seems like it is only about diet. Watch the guy. Poor diet is only part of the problem. Our fast paced culture doesn’t afford us much time for self care but we MUST DO THIS. You want to have the best chance of weathering a viral outbreak? Give your body what it needs 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and equip your immune systems with a fighting chance!!

3. Get tested for celiac disease and hidden food allergies.

Your doctor can use a blood test to help diagnose celiac disease, which occurs when your body has an immune reaction to eating gluten.

If you have Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism like I do… know that the gluten protein is VERY SIMILAR to the thyroid hormone. With Hashimoto’s that is EXACTLY what our immune system is attacking!! Eating gluten is causing an immune response but it is NOT celiac disease… Those of us with Hashimoto’s should avoid gluten all the same to avoid the painful consequences.

4. Get checked for heavy metal toxicity.

Mercury and other metals can be a risk factor for autoimmunity.

How about those fillings in your teeth?

5. Fix the gut.

About 60 to 70 percent of your immune system lies right under the one-cell-layer-thick lining of our gut. If this surface breaks down, your immune system will get activated and start reacting to foods, toxins, and bugs in your gut.

6. Implement supplements.

Nutrients like fish oil, vitamin C, vitamin D, and probiotics can help calm your immune response naturally.

7. Exercise regularly.

Consistent exercise is a natural anti-inflammatory. You don’t necessarily need to go to the gym, run on a treadmill, or pump iron to stay in shape. Just start moving around more, use your body more, and have fun.

8. Practice deep relaxation.

Stress worsens your immune response. Calming techniques including yoga, deep breathing, and massage can reduce stress and anxiety to promote relaxation.

I used to run marathons in the mountains (ever read about the Bridger Ridge Run? I participated TWICE and was a member of the Big Sky Wind Drinkers!!). When the FMS joined forces with the Hashimoto’s, my training would cause FMS flares so I had to learn new ways of moving to prevent them. If you can run marathons or visit the gym, PLEASE DO SO!! 9. Sleep eight hours every night.

Lack of sleep, or poor sleep, can damage your metabolism, cause cravings for sugar and carbs, make us eat more, and drive up our risk of numerous conditions from diabesity (I AM IN LOVE with this term!!) to autoimmune disease. Sleeping well is essential for vibrant health and reversing inflammation.

When I was first diagnosed with FMS, the doctor told me that THE FIRST THING TO FIX was my sleep pattern. Would you believe that I actually thought it was NORMAL to get woken up by flying insects in the room? Who in their right mind has to remain at that level of heightened awareness?!?! NOBODY!!! Thing is, when FMS kicks in that is what it’s all about. Somewhere along the line there was an event that turns our “fight or flight” switch on and breaks it in the ON position. For me, it was the death of my father whom I had been engaged in a 3 year battle of who can refuse to speak to the other longest match. For someone else, it can be traced back to a car accident… Correcting my sleep pattern truly was the first step towards the path of healing. How to do that? Suggestions are in the video below;
