RULE NUMBER 6

I came into the Hardesty family with many issues regarding any person of authority over me. Couldn’t be told the who/what/why/when/where/how to do things. Always argued to be right and if anyone disagreed, got very defensive/obstinate. My insecurities created a dragon sized ego ready to torch anyone who dared have a differing thought or opinion other than mine (NOW KNOW = because I wanted their approval = THAT WAS MY WORTH). EXCEPT ONE. Don’t know how he did it or remember what he said but I NEVER felt threatened by this one man. He had a way of thinking and expressing while CONSTANTLY and LOVINGLY teasing. It was a bit of a game for us… A sparring yet connective love language that softened my ego and enabled me to accept viewpoints other than my own. With one of his precious last breaths, he told me “There’s my angel…” but little did he know he was one of mine too.

That highly influential man in my life was Charles Kenneth (Grandpa) Hardesty. I only knew him briefly… Met my husband in 1985, Grandpa passed in 1995. 10 years is not a very long time to know someone and have them create such a profound impact on your life. Like my father, he had stories of a harsh patriarchal upbringing. Unlike my father, he did not pass it down… What did his example teach me? How to not take myself so seriously.

“My dear friend, I’ve seen many things in my life, but never anything as remarkable as this. Would you be willing to share with me the secret of Rule Number 6?”

“Very simple,” replies the resident prime minister. “Rule Number 6 is ‘Don’t take yourself so damn seriously.’”

“Ah,” says his visitor, “that is a fine rule.” After a moment of pondering, he inquires, “And what, may I ask, are the other rules?”

“There aren’t any.”

Dr. Wayne Dyer, The Power of Intention

Don’t get me wrong. Life can be FULL of stress! To quote Jesus “in this world you will have trouble.” Stress causes DIS-ease (physical and mental)!! Jesus was also recorded saying “do not fear” at least 80 times in the bible… I don’t believe we can hear or read it enough and we still cling to those trophies of distress as if our lives depended on it (read much good news lately?). Do our lives depend on it? Will what we are worrying about in any given moment matter on our death bed? If the answer is “NO” then “LET IT GO”. We come from a creator that intends joy, love, peace… not trouble!! Trouble starts with our ego…

Dr. Dyer claims that OUR INTENTION CREATES OUR REALITY. Hard to believe that we can intend good and bad moments into existence!! I may share in another blog sometime how I thought myself to die, had a life after death experience and “came back” with a changed sense of knowing… Based upon that personal fact and to quote many philosophers more, “AS YOU THINK, YOU ARE”, I dare say that it is a rare individual to truly want a stress filled reality and there is something underneath that ego (earlier example of my want of approval making me defensive and obstinate) impending their true purpose in life. We all intend from our creator of love, joy, playfulness and desire as much. GOOD NEWS is Dr. Dyer suggests the following 10-step program for doing just that …

  • Remember that your natural state is joy.
  • Your thoughts, not the world, cause your stress.
  • You can change your thoughts of stress in any given moment, and eliminate the anxiety for the next few moments, or even hours and days.
  • Monitor your stressful thoughts by checking on your emotional state right in the moment.
  • Make a conscious choice to select a thought that will activate good feelings.
  • Keep “Rule Number 6” in mind.
  • Accept the guidance of your Source of intention.

  • Practice being in silence and meditation.
  • Stay in a state of gratitude and awe.
    • I like to meditate at least three times per week, write down three things I am grateful for first thing in the morning and practice reverence (beautiful sunrise, sound of the spring birds…) as much as possible. If I get thrown off kilter by what seems inconvenient or uncomfortable? >>>RULE NUMBER 6<<<
